Guardian of the Veil
Im telling you without references it makes you push art in different ways. This drawing has inspiration from a very specific moment in my life. I was homeless living out of my 2007 Lincoln town car in Pheonix AZ. I was at this park and needed to charge my phone. I saw these duplexes and thought I might be able to ask a resident for a charge. There was a green bulb illuminating a little alley walkway up to the door. When I started into the alley there was a heaviness in the air. In front of me to the left of the walk way a black cat was chillin. However it looked like it had been through a hell of a life, emphasis on the “Hell.” It has tuffs of fur missing, one eye, and a mangled appearance. It calmly stared at me as I walked past. Almost as if gazing straight into my soul to determine my morality. But as I walked by, its gaze was locked onto me and its head twisted and followed its line of sight. It’s head twisted in such a way that WAS NOT physically possible, like an owl. It deeply disturbed me. The whole image of this cat and the haunting way it watched me and the courage I mustered up to pass this abnormal being is forever etched into my memory as something powerful and supernatural. I believe it was a guardian for that walkway, perhaps for the owner of the door with the green light. With all seriousness I firmly believed I was passing into some area in-between the realms of life and life after. This cat was the on the borderline. As of right now there is a “spring-summer” shirt available for sale on this website with this drawing strewn across the back. Because as scared as I was in the moment, the cat let me pass with no fuss and I felt honored and accepted. End of day this drawing means a lot to me and is a testimony to my experiences in life.
