About the founder

William CK Redd II

Just call me Redd.

Redd is a dark artist with a joyful view of life. Barely Improved Studio grew from a simple idea: make room to experiment, take art seriously without taking yourself too seriously, and build something that helps artists feel seen.

01

Why the dark?

Most of Redd’s work leans toward the strange, unsettling, grotesque, spooky, or unfamiliar. That does not come from wanting life to be darker. It comes from wanting people to become less afraid of the parts of imagination and emotion that are usually pushed away.

The goal is to make the unfamiliar feel familiar. Shock can open a door, curiosity can keep it open, and understanding darker ideas can make the light in ordinary life easier to recognize and appreciate.

02

Barely improved.

Barely Improved is about getting better without turning improvement into another way to punish yourself. Life still comes first. Growth matters, but it does not need to become a religion, a performance, or a demand for perfection.

The word barely keeps the idea human. You do not need to become a god. You do not need to satisfy every person who thinks you are not good enough. If you are trying to become better, help others, and improve the world around you, that effort already matters.

03

Choosing the artist.

Redd grew up in a broken home and later joined the Marine Corps, putting everything he had into that chapter of his life. It also became something he had to heal and recover from.

For years, art was present without being treated as a real path. The safer script was to fit in, chase the expected version of success, and prove worth through work that looked respectable from the outside. Choosing art meant finally choosing something that had been there the whole time. Once that happened, life began to make more sense.

04

One choice, repeated.

The 365 Project began as one decision: draw every day for a year. What looked small on day one became a daily ritual and a way to put attention, energy, and passion into something substantial instead of letting it disappear into endless scrolling.

The project has become proof that change can begin with a choice and then be built through ordinary daily determination. The drawings have changed, but so has everything around them.

Where Barely Improved is going

A studio that grows beyond one artist.

Barely Improved Studio is being built toward a larger community of artists across disciplines. The long-term goal is to connect kind, respectful, serious creators who support one another, organize art events around the world, challenge normal thinking without turning cruelty into a personality, and help more people reach real recognition.

There is no required medium and no preferred level of fame. The standard is simpler: make something honestly, treat people well, stay curious, help others when you can, and keep creating.

Make the strange familiar. Help people feel less alone. Improve without forgetting to live.
